When the 9000 came around being first with a serpentine belt, Saab came out with a bulletin advising NOT to replace the belt as soon as cracks were visible but only when pieces larger than 1/2" or so were missing from the inside. I guess they suddenly got an avalanche of warranty claims because drivers saw the cracks right away on the backside.
As a quinky dink. I just replaced a Gatorback belt on a Volvo 960 last week. The car had some rumbling noise and I thought it was either the idler pulley or tensioner pulley and removed them quickly to check but nothing strange was seen. Since it was a freebi and I was short of time I didn't check the belt much since it looked good but just hooked it back up again but was not pleased with the sound something was making.
So I removed the belt again and low and behold when looking closely at it, it was split lengthwise over 1/4 of the belt but when running the engine I could not see that, only hear a noise.
I could easily grab the two parts and rip it apart all the way around. I had seen this car for 2 years and 30K miles and did not see anything wrong with the belt before, looking at those serrated ribs, but for some reason it got old and dry and cracked that way instead and it was only the noise alerting me.
