If you are going to call the 9-3SS engine a modified Cobalt engine, then you might as well call the 9-5 engine a modified Triumph Dolomite engine.
The Ecotec is an absolutely world-class modern engine. All-aluminum construction, direct-drive for many of the ancillaries, just worlds away from the 1/2 iron lump (roots in the 60's) under the hood of the 9-5. The only reason it is only in 210hp tune in the Saabs is marketing - it is capable of far more with no issues. If GM had any brains they would have put it in the 9-5 as well. They just didn't want to spend the money on a car that was supposed to be replaced way back in '05. Guess what will be under the hood of the new 9-5 in '11?
But I would certainly say the 9-3 is the more reliable car over the long hall, they just don't have much in the way of serious issues. Most of the stuff that people whine about on the various forums are cheap materials in the interior. Not much at all in the way of expensive mechanical problems. Biggest ones are probably coolant leaks into the autotragics that caused some transmission failures in the early cars, and broken front springs. The first was the subject of a recall, I believe, and the second an extended warranty. Much better than endemic sludge, DIC, throttle body, and HVAC issues with the 9-5. And the ever-popular heiroglyphics on the SID.
