The cap doesn't serve any function other than to keep dirt and grit out of the shrader valve (sort of like the valve stems on your tires). You may want to blow it out with some compressed air before you recharge the system. That valve opening and thread is a standard size so if you want to replace it you might be able to find it at a generic auto parts store. Good luck!
