I have had my 9-5 for one week and about 500 miles. Test drives are good but living with the car for a week is a bit more. This is my 5th Saab and my third 9-5 Aero. Like many I left the brand when it looked like GM was going to let it die on the vine. I owned a Lexus SC430 for the last 4+ years and traded it for my Aero. The Lexus was more than competent, bullet proof but in the end sterile and soulless. This new Saab is just a blast to drive and I am taking it easy for the first 1000 mi. I do have a fairly loaded model so I am enjoying some of the new technology. HUD is terrific, took some getting used to but now I always use it. The voice recognition technology is much better than my Lexus. Also when using the NAV and HUD together the turn instructions come up on the HUD, very clever and useful. I am sorry to go on about this since you are considering a base model. As far as cost I got mine sticker was $54,550, paid 47k and got better than KBB for my trade. Now I am in Boston so I could play one dealer against another and they had the car in stock. I think if you priced an A6 or 535xi similarly equipped, both would be quite a bit more and maybe the dealers are less likely to deal. Whether you get one loaded or not the drive is the same. I think you would be better off in the 9-5, but I am not claiming to be objective. Good luck with your decision, either way were both back in the Saab family. If you have any questions ask away and I'll try to answer the best I can.
