Timing Belt Fixed; Tranny Died????????

2000 9.5 V-6 134,000: First off THANKS SWEDE. The Timing belt repair was A-OK. BUT on my post repair test drive, I got 4 miles before the tranny failed. Looked out the rearview and see smoke. Pulled to the side and that was it. Tranny had belched about 2+ quarts, I got no reading on the stick! Waited 30 minutes and checked the level again, it was only down a quart. I added a quart which brought the level back to normal. Tried to head out and got six feet. There is a real awful sound from the vicinity of the starter. That led me to suspect the cam belt bearings (now replaced). I'm stumped. AAA got me back to home base. I have yet to investigate from below (just to tired). I could not see anything amiss from a top down view. HELP please. Should I try a "home remedy", pull the tranny and deliver to a shop or tow for a repair? Frankly; I just don't trust tranny repair shops. Thanks, PFB.
