I am not sure about batteries, but I have sad story about an elderly gentleman that I know concerning his Lexus RX330 Hybrid.

The thing died on him and he was told (correctly, I suppose) by the Lexus dealership that it was the inverter. I have not researched even what the inverter is, but it cost $10,980 replace!! $10,980! That really angered me, as I thought the dealership was taking advantage of him.

He went ahead and got it fixed, but I told him that he should be SCREAMING at Lexus over this. I don't care if the vehicle was out of warranty or not -- he went out on a limb and purchased advanced technology to save a few dollars in gas, and look what it got him.

He finally (very nicely, of course as he is a very nice gentleman) called lexus and they mailed him a check for $2,000. I would have demanded at least half, but I guess he should feel lucky to get what he could get out of them.

Still, it just burns me. $10,980!!!! $10,980!!! That is simply insane. I joked with him and said, "but think of all of the money in gas you saved ;o)"

Good luck with the Prius. I guess the thought of saving $500-$1000 in gas each year (depending of course on the miles driven, price of gas, mileage comparison, etc) is appealing, but still, I gotta have my SAAB!
