Completed a tour of national parks and monuments, 13 days, 4333.3 miles round trip. MPG=30.8 from north rim of Grand Canyon to Lawrence KS. Obtained better MPGs at higher altitudes; thinner air and less air drag. Lots of mountain driving.
Most National Parks were quite empty as well as many roads. Made use of paddle shifters and rarely use brakes on down grades. Most others were had brake lights on most of the time [idiots]. Roads were mostly good, AZ and NM had bad roads. NM has insane speed zones all over the place; example, 25mph going up a mountain. Lots of blood on the roads from deer strikes. We saw a lot of wild life, herds. Near Jackson Hole, people would stop and block the roads to take pictures of animals far away - creating a hazard. We took pictures of the people. We were on a remote mountain drive and got caught up in a fall roundup, hundreds of cattle and lots of cowboys moving the herd along, that was fun.
We had no reservations, so we did not have to be at any location at any given time. That was great, our destination was always where we happened to be at the moment. We took scenic routes whenever possible. Made good use of a $80 National Parks annual pass. My wife was in tears a few times because things were so beautiful.
Saab ran perfectly.
