I wouldn't remove the thermostat housing without Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 18:24:05 In Reply to: Re: Replacing Thermostat, remove plastic under car?, saabsince 93b [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 12 Nov 2010 09:19:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
first draining the coolant. It's really not that bad to use the valve on the rad. You need to find it first, and then loosen it with the right tools. I suppose it can be hard to get to if you are big.
You need a deep socket (forget the size, need to search...perhaps 9mm?) and then connect it to a "screwdriver" adapter. Then, get it onto the valve and loosen it. Of course, make sure the engine is cold so you don't burn yourself while you're in there. Once the nipple is out, you take a hose to it and place the other end of the hose in a receptacle. It's easier if you have a helper do this with you.
If you let the coolant drain out where the t-stat is, you'll get everything dirty with coolant and not to mention it'll spill all over the place. Don't know how much you care about your car, but I certainly like to keep things clean.
