HELP! Stumped, fearing the worst...

Let me preface this story by saying that I just dumped a significant amount of money into dropping sump, cleaning pickup and hoses, basically a mini
de-sludging job.
Also recently, I noticed that the temp gauge has been lower than level, drops to zero and comes back up with restart. Both the tstat and coolant sensor have been done 60-50K ago.
Here's the horror:
Yesterday, I'm standing at a light on a incline. My 03 9-5 Aero (145K) is in sport mode. Light turns green, I gently press depress the accelerator to get moving uphill and a I get a loud BANG!!! from the engine bay. the sound it made was very similar to the sound the car made when my TB air intake hose popped off the TB. the bang also resonated through the steering and gas pedal (slightly).
I went out this morning and my coolant is level. I don't know how high I had it before but its 1/2 between the max and min range on the reservoir.
Coolant also does not appear brown or muddy (last night I thought it had some froth to it). I checked the oil today and saw some condensation bubbles on the dipstick (but the engine was cold). The wild temp gauge made me think of head gasket or oil cooler issues.
Immediately after (and still) I think the car is running rougher than it was before.
Was this a vac hose? some sort of mount that tore under load (also done 20K ago)?
What can this be? I know this is a vague question but I'm fearing the worst.
