Those who are wondering about preventive replacement of a turbo on older 2.3 LPT might learn from my experience. My symptoms were puff of blue smoke occasionally, especially after sitting a while. It could have been other things, but it was the classic early symptom, and the car has 160K miles, so I decided not to wait for a dramatic event. Went with a GT17 cartridge from XSBoost for $400 plus shipping as well as a turbo gasket kit and seven studs from eEuroparts. Bought WIS.
The good: All nuts/studs loosened without too much effort, but three of the four nuts at the exhaust manifold came out with their studs. Just replaced with new ones. Turbo bearing still solid on compressor side, but a little sloppy at exhaust. Prepared to battle the four bolts holding turbo center section to the exhaust turbo housing, but they came out easily. Then...
The bad: Old center section (cartridge) stuck to exhaust turbine casting. Heated with MAPP torch - still stuck. Heated more, using hammer and bar to finally separate. After separating I could see the problem - oil leaking from the seal into exhaust turbine had coked and glued the center section and exhaust scroll together along the entire angled face. Had to remove all of this before I could install new cartridge. Difficult removal, trip to store for new MAPP cylinder, cleanup of exhaust housing -- added at least three hours to my job.
The best: Job is finished! I took advice from forum (Don) and scribed marks on compressor/exhaust housings to align on reassembly – if I had used sharpie or pencil the marks wouldn’t have survived the heat treatment. After installation I removed plugs, DIC, fuel pump fuse and then cranked until oil light went out before I started the car. Seems fine, but time will tell.
Thanks again for all the help the forum provides.
