E85 has about 76% as much energy per gallon as E10. Yes, ethanol is an octane booster, but if you are buying the appropriate grade of gasoline you'll get no benefit from the higher octane E 85 would provide. In fact, if you used pure E85, you would go about 76% as far on a gallon of gas as as you would on E10 because of the lower energy content.
Octane rating simply indicates the resistance to knocking and by itself has nothing to do with the amount of power in a gallon of gas. In modern cars with knock sensors, if you use lower octane gas, they will retard the timing to avoid knocking and associated engine damage and that will reduce your power and gas mileage. But they aren't designed to take advantage of gas with higher octanes than what you get with premium gas.
