I have been meaning to do this for a few months.
We have Two 9-5 Aero cars here 2001 wagon with 90,000
and a 2007 4 door with 38,000 owned since 28,000, both are automatics.
The 07 is basicaly stock and used around town with some trips.
The 01 we have had for about 5 years got it with 42,000 I have done work on it to increase performance and reliabilty. Both cars are not driven in the bad Northeast winters.
Motor 01 - at 45000 ARP head bolts were put in and the balance shaft chain was taken out. There is some vibration when cold at ideal but once warm
no vibration, the performance difference is noticecable this is also
done on both of my 9000 Aeros with no vibration at cold but they are 5 speeds.Nicks intake pipe, the filter is stock paper, it is proven that aftermarket performance filters lets dirt through.ETS intercooler was just added but bad weather came so not much resting was done, it was cold so performance was better, there was little to no boost drop. Maybe motor was running a little hotter from the increased mass
in front of the rad. With the ETS brackets had to be made to hold the oil cooler on as they were too short and the baffles on the lower plastic pan
had to be trimmed to fit . Now the oil cooler lines rest on this pan which I think will be OK.Exaust is a 3" BSR down pipe that went in like a dream with a Saab Remus sport after the BSR 3 " cat. The car passes emissions all the time.Merc. antifreeze is used with Red Line water wetter, Red Line 10-40 is in the motor, and a complete flush of the trans was done at 50,000 and Red Line D4 ATF is used A machine was attached on 2 lines and fluid was run till clean. The plastic engine cover is removed as it is a heat trap and will shorten the life of all those PCV 6 hoses.
Nicks poly trans mount was put in and the ideal vibration has doubled when cold. This was done at the same time the ETS was put in as some of the vib might be coming from the oil lines on the pan. It does make shifting firmer, but you have to live with the vib.
Suspension 01 - Koni shocks set in the middle, X brace connecting the sub frame mounted from underneath, 18 " wheels with Michelin Sport AS Plus.
The rear suspension has been rebuilt with new Cross stay bushings all 4, Poly trailing arm bushings and 1 " spacer used to elevate the rear springs, this was made of alu. using the steel snap ring and placed on the bottom grove of the shock.top grove made it too high. Two of Nick's thick spacers was used on both sides and I got my goal of 1.0 camber on both sides. The sus. is very tight all orginal parts in the front with a rebuilt back , with the raised springs and 1.0 camber it is not as nimble as before but this is mostly a interstate car. Before the rebuild the rear camber was 1.7 and inner tire wear was not that bad , this new set up should save tire ware.
headlights 01- E code lenses with Daniel Stearn bulbs , they seem better than the HID 07.
This car has a stock ECU and with the mods I have done I can run hilly interstates at 80 MPH with no shifting out of 4th, fuel milage is between 30-35. I understand there are more trouble with 5 speed Trans than 4 speed and I would say it is because the 5 shifts more.
I have only drive two 9-5 cars just the ones we have , the 07 feels like a much lighter car handles much better , the 01 I believe is made of better materials in certain areas, both are good cars , but you have to know their short comings and either try to make them better or live with it.Many thanks to this board for the info., what you have to do is take it in and draw your own conclusion as to what you will do.
