I opened up the blower compartment looking for a leaf or stick or jumbo pine needle clump - nothing. I did see that one of the zip ties to the motor had worked loose so I replaced it

I put it all back together and two days later the noise reappeared. Eventually it went away again and I still don't know what caused it to appear then disappear.

If yours is as loud as you describe there must be some foreign object in there. Don't forget to look on the bottom side of the squirrel cage, something big enough to cause that noise is probably hiding in the lowest spot.
