MAJOR install... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Mon, 3 Jan 2011 06:39:50 In Reply to: 9-5 Navigation system into 1999 9-5, AsherSPG, Sun, 2 Jan 2011 21:23:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I looked into this a few times. While it might look cool, it is a very , VERY major installation. The head unit is only one component of the system. It is also not terribly sophisticated in many ways, and updating the map data may cost you as much as $600 (see the other threads here).
Much better off with a separate unit, or - if you have a smartphone - use that.
I have the TomTom app (US/CAN) on my iPhone 4, in a phone cradle from ProFit International (A Swedish co, BTW) on the Saab accessory phone mount. This is powered by a Griffin iTrip Dual Connect (Aux-out plus FM modulator), and the aux-out is connected to an aux-in device to the stock stereo. Plus, I've used the FM mod in another car. It all works flawlessly. I play music on the iPhone, and the TomTom app fades the music down to give me the instruction (doesn't pause it...which is better, IMO), then fades the music back up.
