Automatic not going into park Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] (#972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabsince 93b) on Tue, 4 Jan 2011 07:19:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On our 2003 Aero we were having trouble with the transmission going into park reliably. Intermittently it would not go in, and the car would not start unless you put it in neutral first.
I research the mechanism and realized that there is a rubber or plastic fitting to cushion the or isolate the vibration from the trans to the shifter cable. The plastic is sort of a web design with some air spaces on either side of center pin. Forward and aft to be precise about it. There were some cracks in this webbing. Park position has the cable pulling back all the way.
I theorized that the coupling would occasionally compress too much and not let the lever on the trans go all the way into park.
I cleaned the coupling with brake cleaner and filled the voids with clean Silicon seal. After sitting over night, the silicone was cured.
It has been a month and we have not had the problem again.
You could replace the whole cable and get the new fresher end on it.....but so far this cure has worked for me.
Has anyone else had this problem??
