I would pay the $250-$350 and have this done. This will give you an instant snapshot of the sludge issue. In fact, if you talk to the mechanic that will do this, you could ask him to give the car a good inspection and if it passes the rest of his inspection then do the sludge check since it is the most expensive portion.
As others have mentioned, you will be much happier if you can do at least some of the maintenance yourself.
