Started doing this after local parts store sold me a cheap imitation many years ago. It didn't work, which was confirmed by simply putting in a pan of water on the stove and turning on the burner. I had a certified thermometer, so knew the temps were accurate. Check it on the heat up and cool down. This first one either never opened or closed, don't remember now.
Last time I bought thermostats, I bought something like 6 of them from eEuro. Combo of OEM and Wahler, which may be OEM equiv. All were ordered and marked as 89 or F equivalent. Half were, and the other half opened between 80&82. One of the latter was so sticky I didn't feel it would work regardless. Think I threw out all three. This from a reliable distributor of quality product.
My point is that I won't install a thermostat I haven't checked. Since I have several Saabs, makes sense to have spares and change regularly.
That said, I probably wouldn't fret the difference between 87 and 89. If it takes way to long to come to temp, I'm guessing it opens well before 87.
