The circuitry is potted. At one time they were made with removable, replaceable coils, thinking that coil break down would be the primary failure mode. Turned out that the primary failure mode was leakage of the dielectric heat transfer fluid from the removable, replaceable coil modules, and a completely sealed unit was better. Then came the "black" IDMs, where the primary failure mode was (said by GM to be) breakdown of a JFET that switched current to the coils. As it broke down, it would overheat and ultimately all the smoke would come out of the unit, rendering it useless. It's doubtful that you would be able to recover circuitry or even coils from a failed unit, leaving you the task of reverse engineering and replacing all the internal components at one-off pricing, even if you could find a source for them.
