I did the same pre-emptive replacement on 2001 9-3 that you are suggesting a few years ago.
I used a GRAF brand pump half (made in Italy).
I was changing thermostat, coolant and hoses and wanted to do the pump because mileage was at 120,000.
I think the pumps that go a lot further than 100,000 miles are similar to the ones that fail early; they are statistical outliers and don't reflect the mean condition.
I did find a small amount of weapage at the shaft seal on the original pump when I removed it. The car always used a couple of ounces a year of coolant and I suspect the weaping seal was there from day one.
It worked out well for me and I now have 30,000 miles on the GRAF pump with no problems.
I did find that one of the "O" rings that came with GRAF pump was the wrong size. There are 2 "O" rings on the transfer tube that goes into the engine and they are both the same size on late model(B205 series) engines. Apparently earlier engines used two different sizes. From what I read most of the aftermarket pumps come with the wrong sized "O" rings, so I would order an additional one to have on hand, if you decide to use an aftermarket pump.
