To answer your first question, if you drop the pan, yes, you will see both the cam chain and the balance shaft chain gears. It is unlikely you will have much problem from this, but you should try to get the plastic pieces out of the sump, if you can. There is a very fine screen (too fine, is the general consenus) over the oil pickup tube that will keep any plastic pieces from getting sucked into the oil pump. As Saabs-Waddle mentioned, now is probably a good opportunity to check for sludge.
There is a section in the WIS that discribes how to remove the pan. It is relatively easy and has been described elsewhere.
