The 2.3 is a really stout engine -- just look at the cars on this board with 250K, 280K or more. They sludge and you have to be aware of that. Change the oil frequently and make sure the engine has the PCV#6 upgrade. There's a timing chain, not belt, so that can last a very long time. This is a great engine. Idles somewhat rough, but smooths out at speed.
When I went to Aero Academy in 2003 I talked with one of the Saab execs. I said I'd never had such a big car with a small engine and I asked how much stress the boost put on the internals. He said they crank these up to 700 hp for racing, so 250 hp was no problem. He was right.
Crusty the mechanic has probably seen several neglected 2.3s and so based on his limited experience he thinks they all die at 90K. They'll die without the right oil changes. A neglected V6 is a bad deal, as is a neglected 2.3. But find one with good records, reliable maintenance and both engines can easily see 250K.
