I noticed the same phenomena with our '02 9-5 Aero since acquired w/35k miles years ago. The sump was dropped & checked at 70k, all was well. This engine is more suseptible (sp?)to blow-by as shown in all of the issues with sludge etc. hence the oil darkens quickly at least that is my theory. We moved to the southwest at the end of the last year, I switched to Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40. The oil has the special rating ACEA A3/B3 API SJ (Mobil has a 10w40 HM that does not meet this criteria)& it is not nearly as dark after 1k miles. Be careful about the oil ratings. The Valvoline SynPower is a modified petroleum distillate & may not meet this rating.
