transient flashing CEL with no fault codes

2003 Aero wagon autobox, 70,000 miles, vehicle was in a closed garage with temperature in the 50's. It was 73F on the street.
Engine start was normal. Clean roads, was pushing the engine a bit. Boost looked normal and indicated boost seemed to come on without delay, but power & torque was not as good as it should have been. Torque was steady, no surging and no obvious missing or anything else of note. I would say that this is a new development, and not a condition that has been developing slowly. However, vehicle has not been driven very often.
After accelerating to 55 mph, the CEL was flashing, so drove with a light throttle after that and again, things felt ok. Then the CEL stops flashing after perhaps a minute. At home soon after that and scanned for codes and there were none. [traction control light was not doing anything.] No messages on the SID.
Plugs are 7ES and quite new. Battery voltage was good when starting and underway. Gas tank was nearly full. Low miles on 10/40 synthetic oil.
Other than routine maintenance and new IDM last July, the vehicle has not has not need much work, so very little has been disturbed.
Any ideas?
