If it is the intermediate shaft and it won't come loose, you would have to take out the alternator and loosen the bracket from engine and bring down the shaft with transmission, big headache.
A lot of times it comes down to having a huge pry bar that you can get some leverage with and give it a quick jolt, not a steady pushing/pressing. You need to surprise the lock ring so he doesn't get a chance to build up a defense.
Sometimes it is not the lock ring holding it but that the shaft has actually seized to the bearing/bushing in differential.
