I changed my PS pump a year/45k miles ago after the front shaft seal expired, letting pricey CHF-11 gush out the front of the pump. Luckily I was able to make it home from that trip (started failing ~50 miles from home after having driven nearly 1000 miles that day).
IIRC, I took the MAF sensor, bellows and turbo intake tube off (looong 3/8 extension and a T30 or 35-can't remember which socket for that) to give me easier access to the pump. I went with a used pump with well under 100k on it, as I was able to locate one locally/immediately. The only gotcha I ran into was getting the tube that the low pressure hose clamps to off the old pump so I could transfer it to the replacement.
+1 on changing the serp belt while you're at it. If the pump goes, count on it, as the belt will be oil-soaked.
