2006 9-5 Engine Whine

I drive a newly purchased 2006 9-5t 2.3 sport with 57,000 miles on it. The engine whines between idle and 2,000 rpm. I'll have the oil pan checked for sludge (though I don't think thus is the issue as whine seems rpm dependent), but what else shall I ask my mechanic to loom for? Loose belts? Gaps in hoses? Alternator? Any way to distinguish between whining sounds on basis on loudness, pitch, location? Thanks for the advice!
Also, any advice on reducing road noise?
