This is true, the ECU in our SAABs will adapt to different driving styles and can affect all sorts of requests for fuel, air, boost, so on and so forth. I just had a tune done on my 03 Aero yesterday and learned a lot about this. I could see the charts from before the tune and there were alot of weird spikes, both high and low, just strange requests from the computer. I suspect alot of it had to do with the fact the car had stuck valves on one cylinder for awhile, and was therefore trying hard to compensate. Even though the car had been fixed and running great for 9,000 miles, it seems the computer hadn't full recovered yet.
With the old stuff wiped out and the ECU setup for what I want and expect, the car drives SOOOOO much better. I can't even believe how much more ooompffff it has at the low end and the power delivery is incredibly smooth. Before the tune it seemed to bog down at the low end and delivery was lumpy. Not anymore. A great investment, and what was a quick car is now an absolute rocket! I recommend anyone to get at least wipe their ECU but definitely look into some custom tuning.
