How much white smoke, and for how long? And was it cold out? When the V6 is cold it runs VERY rich. I had an '01 V6 in high school. My neighbor across the street had one too and we'd both leave in the morning leaving huge white smoke/steam clouds behind us.
Don't get too scared. The V6 isn't THAT bad to work on. If you're going to be doing anything having to do with the timing, do yourself a favor and invest in the cam/crank-shaft lock kit.
Start with pulling the intake manifolds off and pulling the cover off the oil cooler. It's between the "V" of the engine banks. If it looks like a mocha milkshake in there you've probably found your problem.
Good luck!
