I have seen professional technicians do that. There are tangs on the converter that drive the pump. If you didn't hear any loud cracking noises, you might be able to get away with just the seal. On the 9000s you could destroy the ZF transmission by doing that, but these Japanese boxes seem to be more forgiving.
