I did this recently on an 01, I bought it knowing it needed a turbo, and once that was done I did the timing belt.
The most difficult part was dealing with the oil tube, it's in the way of one of the exhaust studs, I tried everything and it wouldn't come out, I ended up bending and twisting it out of the way.
In hind sight, I would replace the exhaust studs when the manifold is off, as I broke two on the reinstall.
I used the CHRA from Swedish Dynamics, no problem with the housing being chewed up, and the shaft was flopping around a lot.
I've read that some have replaced the CHRA with the housing still attached to the engine, but the space is tight, and the 4 10MM bolts that hold the CHRA in can be tough to remove, they need lots of heat and vice grips because the heads rust down to a size that no wrench will fit!
I find it better to put the housing in a vice and work from there.
If the price for the car is right, it can be rewarding, both in $$ and personal satisfaction of a job well done.
