I made an attempt at my front wheel bearing tonight (1999 so pressed not bolted. I wish were bolted). got everything loose and off except the shaft from the hub. WIS says plastic hammer. phsst! ha! I rubber mallet it. center punched it with a big phillips and 5-lb hammer. notta. I know this was a mistake but I even hammered the crap out of it with the 5-lb hammer!! notta. tried it with the old nut flush at the end and then without the nut. even with PB (although not in there long and the splines are so deep not sure it would ever get all the way back). notta!! so, had to put it ALL back together. guess I will take it to a local indie.
this is very disappointing. I have been planning this, buying tools. even bought the 12-ton press today. still in the box. can take them all back if need the $ after paying someone to do the job. couldnt even get the knuckle off so I could take it to get it pressed. very very disappointing.
165k mi and orignal bearing. dont think that hub has ever been off. just too seized? any magical ideas before I take it hopefully tomorrow to get it done by a pro?
oh..BIG scare also. of course even with everyone's warnings, I smashed the outer threads on the center shaft. I was desparate. VERY concerned for a while there. after putting everything else back together, I calmly went to work with the old center nut, WD40 to lub it and the 25" breaker bar working it on and off and eventually all the way past the compromised threads. once got passed them, was OK. BIG WHEW! I think it will be OK now as long as it comes back off OK past those and will probably (I hope) help clean and straighten those first few outer ones out more when it comes off again.
we'll see if the pros can get the shaft loose. maybe my PB is still in there working.
