I've been slow to really warm up to the power train on my recently purchased 2005 ARC 2.3T with 5 speed manual gearbox. I REALLY like the '05 styling, and in a wagon that came w/o the roof rails, it looks sooooo sleek. But, I find the 2.3T 4 cyl coarse and intrusive around town compared to my departed 1999 SE with V6 and auto box. I loved that car's smooth a seamless performance... especially in Sport mode.
HOWEVER, the 2.3T and 5 speed are yielding impressive fuel mileage. This last weekend on a quick round trip to the cottage, I did a proper fill-to-fill fuel consumption calculation and was pleased to see 39.2 miles per Imperial gallon as a result! That's about 32.6 MPG US or 7.3 L/100km I think. The best I ever got on the same trip with my old V6 was about 34 MPG Imp. Level roads, premium gas, 110 km/hr on cruise and passing maybe a half dozen times each way.
The 2.3T was much better on fuel in frigid -30C weather too, with all city driving this winter. It got 21 MPG Imp when my V6 would drop to 16-17 MPG under the same conditions.
I like eveything else about this wagon a lot. I'll be trying to get used to the grumbly motor as best I can.
