Yes, heat shield is required. Figure its on one of your listed 9-5 Aeros which would have the pre-cat on the downpipe. The small metal shield is designed to keep extreme heat from melting the CPS (seen that once before). Also as the sensor ages, it will become more sensitive to heat and will reduce its usable life. I do them from the top with a universal joint, a 24" extension and t-30 socket. Most of the time needed is getting the cover refit haha. As Chris mentioned, try from below.
