A little more info might help.. Is it RPM dependent? Do you hear it whether the AC is on or not?
I assume you're in the US, using the term "Driver's side", meaning the left side, which is where the automatic transmission is.
I had a really frightening noise from my first 9-5, a 2002 Arc. I'd park the car, and I'd hear a loud knocking noise. I tracked it down to the hard AC lines that ran along the right side of the car in the engine bay. The plastic clips that were installed at the factory had broken, and the AC line was banging around in the engine bay at times. Replaced the clips (total expense of about $10), and no more knocking noise.
