So after over a year trying to get this resolved, someone on the performance board suggested it can be a failing CPS (no other symptoms) since my CPS had almost 80K miles on it, I decided the ease of mind and low cost made it worthwhile to just replace it. Right now with reg gas I can only get it to ping slightly when the coolant is well into 90C in heavy traffic.. and even then the ping is very slight and quickly dealt with by the ECU. So I am quite relieved that I have the choice to use reg again and that I don't get the feeling my engine will blow at any second.
