I'm only half joking. If spark plugs either fired or not and there was no in between, why would you ever replace them short of the car not running at all?
My understanding is that the tips can collect deposits and/or physically deteriorate over time and this affects the "quality" of the spark. Perhaps the size of it, or how long it exists, or the shape or direction of it's travel are important.
I had a recurring misfire problem in my old Civic that could only be fixed by replacing the spark plugs every 3k miles or so. Whatever little deterioration of the plugs that occured in that time would manifest in a multiple/random misfire condition once the car warmed up. This was a symptom of a larger ignition system problem that eventually was fixed by replacing the entire ignition system, but the fact that brand new plugs would completely eliminate the problem points to a significant influence of plug quality on combustion.
