So long as tires are of the same general category (Summer performance, all season performance, regular, snow) there's no problem with different tires front to back. Any minor differences in handling can be made up by adjusting tire pressures a little.
Side to side: I wouldn't try it, although with the LongDepartedandUnlamented Simca, I had at worst 2 German Firestone "Phoenix" size 155 up front, one French Firestone of some type, 145 in the back, and one Conti in the back, and it was fine. Well, fine relative to what the car could do.
