It's not the length of the cable that is the problem. It is the constant wiggling effect back and forth when opening and closing the trunk lid coupled with a bad routing design of the wire harness coupled with a bad choice of copper strands that can't take the wiggle too many times.
But even a softer more pliable copper will not help if the design is flawed. Just look at the Volvo 240 SW and the constant replacement of the tail gate harness after breaking right at the hinge. That harness used a very different copper strands than in the rest of the car (almost like speaker cables) but it was still not enough.
In the 740 and 850 they changed the design with just about no failures at all.
Then you have the 90-91 4D 9000 model that broke the wire harness to trunk all the time and Saab came out with a revised version for that.
As others say, it is enough slack inside the trunk to pull the wires out, repair the broken ones and shove the splice connectors further into the trunk lid so that the flawed area have a new portion of wires to work on and when it breaks the next time, it might be time for a new harness.
