I've had the factory footpads and bars for 8 years on my Aero -- the ones with the little protrusions that fit into the holes above the doors. Once this rack is on it's very strong, but like everyone else I've learned the hard way to protect the roof paint for installing and taking off. You have to stretch out the pads to pop the dimples into the holes. If you try this alone the other side will jump out and put some nice scratches in your roof.
I now lay down a couple of rows of duck tape before I do this. The other problem is the tightening mechanism is easy to break off inside the bar. I fixed this with a nut but it was very tough to get that thing in there.
A trailer hitch rack for bikes gets them out of the airstream, but they are vulnerable. I learned this the hard way on the Garden State Pkwy when the guy behind me didn't stop in time at a toll booth.
