Well after far too long i got around to replacing the booster. Car is an 02 linear wagon.
The symptoms were that hiss from the feet that went away when you pressed on the brakes, code P0171 -Bank 1 too lean and really bad MPG. The long term fuel trim was running around 18% and short term was running at 5-8% at idle. Just for kicks i pressed the brake pedal and watched the STFT drop like a rock to -2 to 0%.
I replaced it with a generic unit, which was swapped out fine.
Looking up as many diy reports as i could find, i did the shadetree swap -not taking the wipers and shield off. The only problem with that is the drivers side lower nut. Took about 10 minutes to get off by reaching under with a stubby wrench.
Of note, if you have a ESP unit, you will HAVE to remove the master cylinder lines at the ESP unit to get the booster out. As you are likely due for a brake fluid change anyways, that is not an issue removing the lines and changing the fluid. Total time was about four hours, next time would be less.
Upon restart, LTFT was at 0% (normal with battery disconnected for so long) ad STFT was 1-2%.
Anyways, thanks for those that have gone here before and if you are getting P0171, this could be the problem.
