The right (passenger) side, left side, and torque bar mount can all be replaced with minimum special tools. Whoever does it will need a floor jack, a torque wrench, and a long profile 18mm combination wrench. Other than that, the tools needed are standard metric sockets and a ratchet.
A Car Club on campus may be a spot where he can borrow tools and extra hands to do this work himself, and be a big confidence booster. Or the work can likely wait until you see him and the car again.
I know the anguish of having a child attending college a long distance from home with a car to maintain. Our oldest went to school at Miami (FL) and the youngest at Rensselaer in upstate NY. 20-1/2 hours or 10-1/2 hours from Dad's tool box and help.
