Your Saab should not detonate, ever. I'm at sea level and I frequently run my Aero on low grade gas - 87 octane. Nary a problem. It isn't quite at its full horsepower potential, but it's still pretty damn swift. I've owned several other Saabs over the years with 2.0 HOT and 2.3 HOT engines, and I never ran anything in them except the cheapest gas I could find. They all ran like a whippit, they all gave good fuel economy, and never had any detonation in a Saab, that's with over 500K plus miles.

I switch to high octane gas in the hottest weather, and I also run high test when I want all the ponies in the engine to be awake (which is becoming more and more frequent :) ) and I haven't noticed that the grade of gas makes any significant difference in fuel economy. I drive 80% highway 20% city and mostly 40+ miles per trip, and my long term milage is pretty constant at 26+ no matter what gas I burn.

I don't spend any time in the mountains with my own car, but I'd burn high octane gas there too.

The secret to buying good gas is to buy from high volume gas dealers. And it's usually the case that the low priced guys are usually the busiest, and their gas is usually pretty fresh.
