5-speed Front Seal Leak

Started to see some spotting on my driveway under 1999 9-5 wagon, felt under, sloppy oil under center.
My indie put it up the lift today, and traced it to the tranny front seal.
He says this is not so serious that I have to jump on it. In two weeks an 800+ mile highway trip must be made to take son back to college.
Any opinions here on this? I know this is the classic 6 dollar part but $600-700 labor deal.
More importantly, is there any easy way to keep check on the level of transmission fluid?
Car needs to be kept until my twins leave college, 3 more years, which means about 15,000 miles. This is because we need a wagon for this, once we are no longer moving kids in and out of college we no longer would need a vehicle that can take this kind of capacity.
FWIW, this car replaced a 1982 VolvoDL wagon that we got in 1989 and kept for 10+ years. That vehicle, a stick, came with a leaky rear engine seal. Same deal, too much to replace though I would have done it if I ever had to do the clutch or if it significantly worsened. It lost just under a quart of oil every 2000 miles (longer if on highway), and since we were driving it 6500 miles a year, I simply accelerated the oil changes to every 2000-2500 miles. But I am not sure I can treat these two conditions the same way.
