NADA shows that a 1999 SE sedan with 114k in NJ area with auto trans to be worth - in good, CLEAN condition, to be worth nearly $5,500.

114k is LOW miles for a 9-5 of that age, and unless there are many, many other issues with the car (bad interior/exterior, needs other engine or suspension work, etc.) it is easily worth spending $1,500 on to get it back into running shape.

Used cars are not going to be free of expenses. If they were, we'd be paying 90% of original retail instead of 10-15% for cars that old.
