My teenage son has been progressing at learning to drive with our (or his..?!) 1999 9-5 2.3 lpt 5spd (181K miles) and yesterday I got his and Wifey's distress call that the car had lost power steering, dash warning lights all lit up and fluid was leaking out in the parking lot they had gotten to. I arrived on the scene and determined that the serpentine belt had slipped off with all the ensuing loss of cooling, charging, power steering, etc. Luckily we had a new battery and I was able to get back home without overheating again. My son helped me wrench on the car as normal to get at reinstalling the belt and it's fine for the moment.
This is a fairly new belt that got it's breaking in of migrating slightly towards the engine block on the water pump pulley, shaving off some rubber and settling in. My own opinion is that this flexible pump pulley design is crap and should have flanges on both sides to keep the belt from running into the block or slipping off the opposite side and disengaging.
I had this happen once before on this car, but attributed it more to a different type belt that was more plastic like and more slippery on its backside than the current rubbery belt I recently installed. Yet, this one just slipped off now.

The water pump is a 2 year old replacement from NAPA and the belt tensioner is only about 1-1/2 years old. Could my kid's stalling out the car abruptly have contributed to throwing the belt? Advice please..

Thanx - Kirk D.
