Being a Saab freak I appreciate the 2.3T in the 9-5 for what it is. It's a rough little four-banger whose basic design dates back to the early 1980's. If you read any of the automotive reviews on it back when it was in production, they almost always mention how "coarse" and "loud" the engine is "for a car in its class." Yeah, that's because it was the only car in its class with a 4-cylinder engine. Yet it made up for the power with turbocharging.
My 9-5 has quite the groan/growl when giving it some gas. It's definitely no silky-smooth, quiet V6. I get in my friend's 9-3ss 2.8t and it's ominously quiet after driving my 9-5. Even my mom's '06 Jetta with the 2.0T 4-cylinder is lightyears smoother and quieter than my 9-5, but that engine design is much newer. No complaints from me though. I like to hear my car.
