Mark; do NOT pound on the end of the axle. You may do lots of $$$$ damage that way. Either get the correct tool to press it out of the housing - like the one that eEuroparts sells - or make up your own tool out of bits/pieces/metric nuts/bolts/whatever you can find. See if Princess Auto (I know there's one in the Toronto are) has something you can use or adapt. Can Tire is pretty much useless for that kind of thing.
That tool is pretty handy to have and it will work on lots of other vehicles too. Better to pay and maybe wait to get one than to break something inside the tranny.
