Another way is to remove the air intake metal pipe and then grab the turbo intake fan on the center nub. Try and push and pull is (end play) if any it is bad. Also check the side to side play. It can have a little but not much.
Any end play = bad
More then a little left and right play = bad
XSBoost on Ebay sells redone turbos, fyi.
I would say either way would do it. If you are getting a little bit of smoke though the turbo, maybe it would not show up on the Throttle Body.
I would also check the torque on the head bolts, although this was a problem more with earlier models I think.
