that's the normal failure mode of the switch. There is a little bearing that runs in a little aluminum track. The track is kind of V shaped. Over time, the bearing wears the corners of the track and gravity takes over causing the wand to (eventually) drop (frequently) activating the turn signal.
The repair is simple: remove the switch (a few screws - hardest part is disconnecting wiring). drill out the top part of each rivet holding the back on (but no deeper - just enough to pull the back off - easy to crack the plastic drilling it all out!). open up. dremel off the rest of each rivet (flush). dremel the V track. line up cover + case + centerpunch (eg /w nail) for the new holes. drill tap dia for 2-56 flathead (1/2" long iirc, and google says #50(.070) drill bit, so approx 5/64" which would be what I used). Screw back together carefully - no need to tap aluminum for 2-56, the screw does that just fine... Now you have a better than new switch because you can just unscrew each screw, dremel + reassemble if/whenever the track gets worn down (in another 10 years) as many times as you like...
I have photos if you want them...
