They should be OK, but I would think their rubber compound might not be quite as good in cold weather and snow as a lower speed-rated tire.
What I do know is this: My W-rated summer tires (Bridgestone Pole Position RE960AS) are actually listed as Ultra High Performance All Seasons. I don't care about the W-rating, it was just what was available in the size I bought. I don't use them in winter, but in 2-3 of inches snow they'd probably be OK if one drove carefully. What I can say is that they flat-spot slightly if the temp is below 55 degrees. It works out after about 10 miles or so, longer if it's cold out. I don't know if this is a characteristic of that model of tire, or has to due with the construction and rubber compound of a W-rated tire. Maybe both? I do know that some other high speed tires have the same issue, although the temps at which it happens varies.
Here in the U.S., there really isn't a need for W-rated tires: not too many places one can go 160+ mph, so a W-rating is sort of meaningless. The differences in performance are less apparent at normal US driving speeds. IMHO, an H-rated tire is fine, especially in winter, and my winter tires are H-rated (130 MPH)
